Is autonomous driving safe?

This is the most frequently asked question by the public before the commercialization of autonomous driving.

According to a new consumer survey report from the Mid-Atlantic Branch of the American Automobile Association, 70% of Virginia drivers said that the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles are the top priority. In January of this year, the American Automobile Association also launched another self-driving car poll, 60% of American drivers expressed concern about taking self-driving cars.

In fact, car safety performance has always been the primary consideration of consumers and car companies. Before a car is officially launched, it has to undergo multiple tests such as road tests, endurance tests, and safety crash tests to ensure that there are no quality problems. This is the responsibility of car companies for their own models and consumers.

For autonomous driving, our safety requirements are even more stringent due to the complete disengagement or long-term disengagement from the control of old human drivers. At the hardware level, autonomous vehicles are equipped with cameras, lidar, millimeter wave radar, and other body sensors to sense road conditions, including whether there are pits in the road ahead, water accumulation, or other roadblocks. At the software level, the algorithm will include the problems that human driving may encounter. After receiving the road condition information, according to the algorithm, it quickly issues a decision instruction whether to turn or go straight, brake or accelerate.
